AI Alliance BW - Data platform

Sharing AI assets for cross-sector AI applications

The KI-Allianz Baden-Württemberg eG aims to create an internationally competitive AI ecosystem for Baden-Württemberg. To this end, six regions are pooling their expertise. Fraunhofer IOSB is playing a leading role with its expertise in open data spaces and AI engineering methodology.

The "Data Platform" project of the AI Alliance BW is developing an operational, customizable platform for companies, public and scientific institutions according to a private-public partnership model based on the following principles:

Generation, management and sharing of data and AI models
Compliance with ethical and legal compatibility
Value enhancement through services, cross-sector linking and standardized metadata
Access to computing resources for the execution of AI models.

Our "AI data production line" exhibit illustrates this concept. In the style of a small workshop set-up, we show how sensor data is generated in different application areas and how information is obtained from it using machine learning (ML) in an ML pipeline.

Factory-X: Data ecosystem for factory equipment suppliers and customers

In Factory-X, several dozen project partners are building an open data ecosystem for factory equipment suppliers and their customers - from factory operators to machine manufacturers and their component suppliers through to providers of automation technology and industrial software. The aim is to enable sovereign data exchange and to develop software solutions, so-called business applications, for various use cases. Factory-X is a lighthouse project within the Manufacturing-X initiative and utilizes preliminary work from relevant projects such as Gaia-X and Catena-X. Fraunhofer IOSB represents the participating research partners in the Factory-X steering committee.

Industrial APP Marketplace: Marketplace for intelligent production

In future, apps for Industry 4.0 applications will be purchased on online marketplaces. The focus on openness, interoperability and open source will give end users the greatest possible benefit in their day-to-day work. It does not matter whether they are machine operators, machine builders, system integrators or APP developers. The Industrial APP Marketplace establishes a manufacturer-neutral marketplace for I4.0 components for buying and selling industrial hardware, software and services. Unlike conventional virtual marketplaces, the Industrial APP Marketplace is a platform for offering and searching for hardware, software and services and is open to everyone. APPs are generally understood to be modern software applications with a modular structure and a user-friendly web browser interface, but in the context of an Industrial APP Marketplace they also include services and solutions. A participant in an Industrial APP Marketplace can take on four roles: the role of APP user, hardware developer, APP developer or integrator. The APP user searches for specific services or solutions, e.g. data acquisition, process visualization, predictive maintenance, etc., which are offered on the Industrial APP Marketplace. The APP developer, hardware developer and integrator place their software, products and services on the Industrial APP Marketplace as a dealer. APP users can add products and services to their shopping cart and receive suggestions for suitable combinations of SW/HW and possible integrators.

Transfer-X: Bringing SMEs closer to the opportunities of the data economy

The end-to-end digitalization of value chains promises major benefits, including resilience to failures and bottlenecks at individual suppliers, verifiability of sustainability standards and progress in the circular economy. Since 2020, the large-scale Catena-X project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BWWK) and involving several Fraunhofer Institutes and departments of Fraunhofer IOSB, has been developing a data ecosystem with corresponding services, applications and connectors for the automotive industry. However, such digital platforms can only be successful if a critical mass of potential users actually participate. This is precisely what the new Transfer-X transformation hub, co-initiated and managed by Fraunhofer IOSB, is working towards.

Digital twins & MaaS

FA³ST for interactive digital twins

Event-based and goal-oriented interactions of assets, represented by asset administration shell-compliant digital twins

Following the vision of Industry 4.0, all assets should understand each other, communicate with each other and even work together directly. To support this vision, our exhibit shows event-driven and goal-oriented interactions of assets represented by their digital twins. These digital twins are implemented as platform Industry 4.0 asset administration shells. In this exhibit, different types of asset administration shells for machines, processes and products can interact as required in order to optimize product quality and the production/inspection process. By representing the assets in a common language and raising awareness of their production environment, production becomes more flexible and better equipped for use cases such as manufacturing-as-a-service, modular production or the circular economy.

To realize the exhibit, the FA³ST service is used to create and manage Administration Shell-compliant Digital Twins and to support real-time communication and synchronization of Digital Twins with their physical assets. The FA³ST service is also used to extend Digital Twins with application logic to create decentralized production and to interconnect the application logics of Digital Twins to handle more complex tasks.

Digital Sustainable Supply Chain Ecosystem (DiSC-Ökosystem)

The DiSC ecosystem is a prototype implementation of the Smart Factory Web reference architecture and was tested in practice as part of Catena-X

With our DiSC ecosystem, we offer a sustainability-focused supply chain ecosystem that enables the Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS) approach and can use artificial intelligence (AI) to mediate manufacturing capabilities between suppliers and consumers. DiSC makes it possible to make supply chains more efficient, sustainable and resilient and to optimize production processes. With DiSC, product quality can be improved, delivery times shortened and costs reduced. Our solution is specifically tailored to the needs of the manufacturing industry and offers comprehensive and reliable support in optimizing supply chains.

DiSC is currently being used to build an ecosystem for mechanical and plant engineering as part of the Factory-X lighthouse project .

Use of digital product passports in supply chain management with the help of FA³ST and the DiSC ecosystem

From digital twins at factory level to sustainable manufacturing as a service in data spaces

Industry 4.0-compliant digital twins can understand each other, communicate with each other and even work together directly. Our exhibit shows event-driven and goal-oriented interactions of assets represented by their Digital Twins for machines, processes and products (Digital Product Passports, DPP) in a plant demonstrator. These Digital Twins serve as information services for our Digital Sustainable Supply Chain Ecosystem (DiSC Ecosystem) for sustainable and resilient supply chains. With our DiSC Ecosystem, we offer a sustainability-focused supply chain ecosystem that enables the Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS) approach and uses artificial intelligence (AI) to mediate manufacturing capabilities between suppliers and consumers.

To realize Industry 4.0 compliant Digital Twins, the FA³ST service is used to create and manage Digital Twins and support the real-time communication and synchronization of Digital Twins with their physical assets. .

Industry 4.0

AGV & robot module: Flexible assistance for production and logistics

As a showcase and connecting element of the trade fair presentation, Fraunhofer IOSB-INA will be presenting a combination of a driverless transport module and an attachment with robot technology. The transport module can use intelligent imaging processes (including LiDAR) to record the terrain and save it as a map, travel to predefined routes and waypoints, process work protocols and recognize obstacles. The attachment with robotic gripper arm (Universal Robots) is equipped with different capabilities and tool attachments. Like the transport module, the robot does not need to be enclosed and can work collaboratively with humans. The robot receives new "capabilities" from the Industrial App Marketplace, and the performance data is made available live via the Stäubli Industrial Connector 4.0 in the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). The combination of all these technologies and the flexibility provided by the modular components ensure a resource-efficient, sustainable production environment tailored to requirements. Additional, automated safety analyses provide an outlook on new safety standards and the simplification of safety checks in changing production setups.

open62541 OPC UA SDK

open62541 is an open implementation of OPC UA, the global language for machine-to-machine communication, programmed entirely in C. This means that the software, which was largely developed at the Fraunhofer IOSB in Karlsruhe, is extremely resource-efficient and runs on any type of hardware, from small embedded systems to large production plants.

ISuTest^® - Automated vulnerability scanning for industrial automation components

The Industrial Security Testing Framework ISuTest® is a tool for finding vulnerabilities in the implementations of automation components. ^ISuTest® is designed as an open, extensible framework and thus sets itself apart from commercial competitors with closed-source software. The direct target group of ^ISuTest® are manufacturers and integrators of automation components. It supports its users from setting up a vulnerability test through to the execution and isolation of vulnerabilities for the developer to reproduce the error, who can then rectify it.

Sustainable working environment with Automated Safety

Sustainable production environments must also provide a safe, sustainable working environment for people. The flexibility of matrix production requires a flexible, intelligent safety concept. We are implementing a prototypical hazard analysis: the clever digital and machine-readable representation of information from the risk assessment of a machine in the AAS allows machine safety (Safety&Security) to be checked using a data-driven process. The result is the automation of risk and hazard assessment for machines. By transferring functional safety properties and the results of the risk assessment, machines can be reused more easily, as their wear, design, intended use and potential hazards are known and their interaction with other machines can be checked more quickly.

Factory Sandbox: Development environment for (future) productions

Implementing Industry 4.0 means exploiting the benefits of digitalization in production and developing new, sustainable business models that incorporate the entire value chain sensibly and efficiently. With the FactorySandbox, Industry 4.0 is (co-)designed and implemented in practice. Here, we are working on the specific issues that industry partners face in practical implementation: The use of data across the entire supply chain, the product carbon footprint and the implementation of the circular economy based on the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) and the digital product passport.

Teleoperation & 5G

Remote control of a forklift truck from 200 km away and Environment Perception Kit

Experience research results from the AKIT-PRO and ROBDEKON projects live: the MATS multifunctional forklift truck, which is located over 200 kilometers away in the real laboratory for autonomous work machines in Ilmenau, can be remotely controlled via a so-called control station module with steering wheel and pedals. Live views of the 3D sensors, camera streams of the vehicle and the perspectives of other cameras in the real-world laboratory are available.

The plan is to control the forklift truck remotely in real time for two hours a day. The rest of the time, a digital twin of the real vehicle is available in a virtual replica of the real-life laboratory for autonomous work machines, which behaves like the real forklift truck. The so-called Environment Perception Kit - an easy-to-install upgrade kit for retrofitting work machines with semi-autonomous and fully autonomous functions - will also be presented.

With the current and future releases, 5G offers the opportunity to implement a wide range of applications. In particular, the real-time capability of 5G enables applications such as mission-critical communications, remote train operation and factory automation. These three verticals will be presented by Fraunhofer IOSB-INA in the 5G Arena at this year's Hannover Messe.

CampusDynA - Dynamic adaptation of campus networks and applications in industrial application scenarios
