Camera evaluation

Experimental evaluation of imaging sensor technology

The Night Vision Technology group at Fraunhofer IOSB operates two laboratories for the experimental evaluation of cameras, night vision devices and image intensifiers. For cameras, the entire optical spectral range from visual to thermal infrared is covered.

Typical measured quantities are (other measured quantities on request):

Visual, near and shortwave infrared spectral range:

  • Field of view
  • Normalized spectral sensitivity
  • Signal Transfer Function (SiTF)
  • Noise (time and location)
  • Line Scan Function (LSF) and Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)
  • Minimum Resolvable Contrast (MRC) and nominal range power

Thermal Infrared:

  • Field of view
  • Normalized spectral sensitivity
  • Signal Transfer Function (SiTF) and Responsivity
  • Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD)
  • Inhomogeniety Equivalent Temperature Difference (IETD)
  • Line Scan Function (LSF) and Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)
  • Minimum Resolvable Temperature Difference (MRTD) or Minimum Temperature Difference Perceived (MTDP) and nominal range power.

Image intensifier:

  • Limiting resolution
  • Signal-to-noise ratio
  • FOM
  • Normalized spectral sensitivity
  • Brightness gain
  • Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)
  • Halo
  • Image error
