Research for safe and secure production facilities

Motivation

In the course of digitization and industry 4.0, the requirements for modern production facilities are constantly increasing. The protection of assets, including the three overlapping areas of safety, security and privacy, is becoming a key challenge for today´s manufacturing systems. Since humans, robots and machines work in close proximity to each other, it is of decisive importance that the components of the system, for example robots, do not injure anyone (safety). Furthermore, the system must be protected against external or internal attacks (security). In addition, with the increasing volume and variety of data processed in manufactoring enviroments, the protection of the employees´ data must be ensured (privacy).

Research of the department „Interactive analysis and diagnosis“

Under the supervision of the Fraunhofer Institute for Anthropomatics and Robotics at KIT (IAR), researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) and the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB) are collaborating on this exciting challenge.

In the newly launched project „ROBOSHIELD“, the department „Interactive Analysis and Diagnosis“ works on various issues concerning data protection and security. In order to provide a secure cooperation between robots and humans, it must be multisensory ensured that humans are at no time in the working area of robots. This data acquisition must be examined for its effects on the protection of the employees' data and potential risks must be reduced.

In the project ROBOSHIELD, researchers are working on tools and processes to support
the human-machine interaction in modern production facilities.
