Case Report

ProVis.Agent® is the control system for managing and monitoring the entire production of the passenger car ‘C-Class’ factory in Bremen. It monitors and controls about 450 PLCs and 2,000 pieces of equipment and provides infor-mation to more than 1,560 users in body shop, paint shop and assembly.

Daimler AG uses the system also in its commercial vehicle factory in Woerth, Germany, where body shell construction of commercial vehicles and, currently, assembly are monitored. In addition, a car body tracking system and a powerful scripting engine have been implemented in Woerth.

Fraunhofer IOSB has been Daimler AG’s production control system partner in Bremen ever since the car factory was opened.

Starting situation

Production control systems monitor and control automated plants, which, in our case, are mainly production plants. Our focus is on manufacturing technology, even though we are also involved in the process industry, in monitoring data processing centers and other application areas.

Our control system is called ProVis.Agent® because we use software agent technology for com-munication within the system and with other shopfloor-related IT applications, for example to exchange data between systems or to trigger other applications directly.

The system control, e. g. switching, is based on the working time and shift model integrated in ProVis.Agent.

The digital factory, which is mainly used to plan new installations and plants today, will soon be used for the operation of plants. The start-up and continuous enhancement of plants will also require the involvement of opera-tions and production control systems. ProVis.Agent® is the first step towards digital factory operation.
