The databases of shopfloor-related IT systems contain the key to future business success. If operational data from manufacturing or assembly processes, e. g. information on disruptions, downtimes, quantities or cycle times, is aggregated in a meaningful way, this clearly helps im-prove operational structures, rendering production management more efficient.

In the case of enterprises operating at multiple locations or consisting of independent business units, however, the data archived by the relevant monitoring & control system can be accessed only by a minor number of people. In addition, the volume of data contained in the archives complicates the effective retrieval of data actually relevant for a specific task. The large quanti-ties of data result from the huge number of individual notifications from production systems that are saved throughout the product life cycle.

Users in production and management require high-quality information at a click of the mouse, ideally presented in the form of meaningful key performance indicators.


The enormous volumes of data bring about extraordinary technological requirements for an en-terprise-wide evaluation system with appropriate manufacturing intelligence logics.

As far as the input of the monitoring and control systems is concerned, for example, large quantities of data have to be recorded within a few milliseconds. In addition, the generation and output of evalua-tion tables or diagrams for hundreds of users at the same time requires a very powerful system

Furthermore, it is indispensable that the system can be customized to the customers’ needs and that the access to the system can be configured specifically for each user, ranging from team members to management. It must be possible to transfer the general concepts of the customer to the system, making sure that the users are faced with concepts they are familiar with.

This ensures that the program can be used in a timely manner, without any extensive training.


Fraunhofer IOSB’s strictly web-based ProVis.Paula® evaluation system is a proven plant in-formation system.

A web content management system (WCMS) is used as a basis and development platform, namely Fraunhofer IOSB’s WebGenesis® product. Thanks to this product, existing components can be reused and the WCMS can also be deployed as an in-house information system.

In practical operation, more than 1,600 users of an international car manufacturer access the manufacturing intelligence server using internet-compliant PCs. They are connected by standard interfaces and the software has been implemented entirely in Java, allowing customers to choose the operating system and the database freely.
