About us

As the largest institute within the Fraunhofer Group for Information and Communication, the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technology and Image Exploitation IOSB has been very successful in implementing the latest research results in ready-to-use solutions. These solutions offer our customers direct cash-equivalent benefits and improve their long-term competitiveness. The Fraunhofer IOSB researches and develops innovative concepts, methods and systems for industry, medium-sized business and clients from the public sector. We always focus on the task at hand and the customer’s problem right from the very beginning.


The development of Fraunhofer IOSB continues to be positive and we are expanding organically furthermore.



Sites of Fraunhofer IOSB. The main sites are located in Karlsruhe and Ettlingen, further branches are in Ilmenau, Lemgo and Görlitz. A contact office is in China in Beijing.


Million Euro were the business expenses of the institute in 2018.


Personnel in total. In addition to our permanent staff we also engaged 170 student assistants and interns.


This is when the history of our institute began, at that time still in Tübingen. Under its current name "Fraunhofer IOSB", however, the institute has only existed since a merger in 2010.

The Fraunhofer IOSB was created as at 1/1/2010 at the recommendation of the German Science Council in 2007 from the FGAN Institute for Optronics and Pattern Recognition FOM in Ettlingen and the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing IITB.

Advisory Board

The Advisory Board advises Fraunhofer IOSB in questions relating to professional orientation and structural change within the institute. The board comprises representatives from science, business, politics and administration.
