Mission / Vision


A sustainable and affordable energy supply, a safe access to clean water and an efficient environmental protection: information and communication are necessary to develop suitable solutions for these future markets.

The Fraunhofer IOSB offers industrial clients and public-sector partners high-performance IT solutions which have an “superordinate” perspective approach enabling holistic solutions.

The energy market solution EMS-EDM PROPHET is an example of the work in that area: It supports energy utility companys and grid operators in handling the wide range of complex tasks in a liberalized market environment. The business areas water management and environment information systems also offers customized IT applications for the private, municipal and public sector.

The goal is to provide holistic solutions which can be flexibly adapted to individual boundary conditions such as service-oriented architectures (SOA) and web interfaces.

In addition to industrial cooperations, the business area also drives technological progress in the future topics smart energy systems and integrated water resource management in a numerous national and international research projects.


The target groups of the business unit energy, water and environment extend from energy utility companies and local water suppliers to regulatory agencies centering on the German market.

However, the business unit can also look back on international industry and research projects in Portugal, the Republic of China, Mongolia and Liechtenstein as well as on European research projects in the field of environmental risk management and environmental monitoring.

The importance of international markets for the sector of Energy, Water and Environment will continue to increase in the medium-term, whereby particular momentum can be expected from Asian countries and the Middle East.

In this way, more reliable leak detection systems could be installed in Libya (Great Man-Made River Project) and Saudi Arabia (Shoaiba III) with the cooperation of ABB Germany.

Moreover, with the help of the application WaterFrame ®an efficient environment information system designed for communal and regulatory use is available, which could be already established successfully in several federal states.
The business area's portfolio is rounded out by the know-how in the field of Maritime Systems, which is specialized in the management of underwater vehicles for automated inspection of subsea infrastructure and for water quality monitoring.
