Events 2022

SPIE Photonics Europe 2022

April 3-7, 2022 in Strasbourg, France

Visual inspection of complex shaped objects is a challenge for automatic image processing systems.

One of the most important multidisciplinary European events presenting research results, covering the latest technologies in optics and photonics - from digital optics and quantum technologies to optical imaging, sensing and metrology. Other topics include THz photonics, 3D-printed optics, photonic eyewear, photosensitive materials and biophotonics.

The Department of Visual Inspection Systems is represented with a poster contribution:

Visual inspection via anomaly detection by automated uncertainty propagation

Authors: Johannes Meyer, Matthias Hartrumpf, Thomas Längle, Jürgen Beyerer

Sensor-Based Sorting & Control 2022

April 13-14, 2022 in Aachen, Germany

The bulk material flies off a conveyor belt at a speed of about 3 m/s and is recorded by a color-capable line scan camera.

The symposium will present papers from industry and academia showing new developments and applications in the field of sensor-based sorting and process control, along the entire process chain from extraction to processing, for primary and secondary raw materials.

The department Visual Inspection Systems will be involved with a presentation:

Systematic Determination of the Influence of Factors Relevant to Operating Costs of Sensor-based Sorting Systems

Inspection system for defect detection in 3-D expanded transparent objects

The most important international trade event for all topics relating to measuring and testing technology as well as vision technology, image processing and sensor technology is the annual Control trade fair in Stuttgart.

Machine Learning as a Key Technology for Quality Assurance with Image Processing

This year, Fraunhofer IOSB and its Visual Inspection Systems department will present the exhibit Purity - Quality Inspection of Transparent Objects. The presented inspection technology currently deals with the challenge in industrial image processing - the detection of inclusions and air bubbles in arbitrarily shaped transparent materials.

20th EMVA Business Conference

12 May 2022 - 14 May 2022 in Brussels, Belgium

The EMVA Conference unites business leaders and technical experts within the machine vision industry from Europe and around the world to present and discuss the trends and challenges of our business. It provides a unique platform in Europe for networking, establishing contacts and exchanging ideas.

Our team is involved in the Panel Discussion:

Non-Visible Imaging: What is the path to mass-market adoption and which applications are key?

In addition to automated inspection processes, AutoInspect also integrates AR-supported manual inspection by a worker. Defects are detected and registered by finger pointing.

Digitization and sustainability - these are the key topics of the world's most important industrial trade fair, setting clear impulses for the transformation of business and industry - towards digitized, climate-neutral and sustainable value creation.

AutoInspect –digital 3D twin for systematic sensor deployment planning and sensor data fusion

The exhibit, in which the Visual Inspection Systems department is involved, exemplifies an infrastructure solution that combines various inspection methods such as ellipsometry or deflectometry and merges the recorded features with metadata with pinpoint accuracy on a 3D model of the test specimen - in this case a car body. On this basis, a wide range of evaluations are possible, from simple statistics to AI/ML methods. The principle is explained in detail at the trade fair booth - a live link to the Karlsruhe research factory shows the current status of our solution.

This exhibit can be found at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft joint booth. Visit us: hall 5, booth A061.

Image Processing Forum 2022

November 24-25, 2022 in Karlsruhe, Germany

Prüfsystem zur Fehlerdetektion in 3-D-ausgedehnten transparenten Objekten

Image processing plays a key role in many areas of technology for fast and contactless data acquisition. For example, in the quality assurance of industrial production processes, in robotics and for driver assistance, image processing systems have gained an indispensable place. This development is supported by the availability of high-quality and inexpensive sensor systems, by the increase in the performance of computer systems, and by advances in the methodology for evaluating image data.

The "Image Processing forum" aims to report on current trends towards solutions in image processing and to contribute to the professional exchange between the participants.

The state of the art in optical characterization of materials is advancing rapidly. New insights into the theoretical underpinnings of this research have been gained and exciting developments have been made in practice, driven by new applications and innovative sensor technologies that are constantly evolving.

The great success of past conferences proves the need for a platform to present, discuss and evaluate the latest research results in this interdisciplinary field. For this reason, the International Conference on Optical Characterization of Materials (OCM) will be held for the fifth time in March 2023.
