Industrie 4.0

Team members of Fraunhofer IOSB's Automation business unit have made major contributions to the CPS research agenda (cyber physical systems), particularly to those chapters dealing with information technology for the factory of tomorrow.

Information technology is one of the key technologies in future factories – standing for
what is called ‘enabling technology’. Among the basic business processes of manufacturing enterprises, production is located at the interface of the processes ranging “from the product idea to production” and “from sales planning to service.” As an ‘enabling technology’, IT is a tool for production, not an end in itself.

In an effort to contribute to the definition of a new architectural model for production,
IOSB has described some of the components of an information model in Fabrik 4.0.

These components consist of

  • basic functionalities in production, e. g. MES systems as factory information hubs
  • methods and standards, e. g. communication or description standards for semantic interoperability,
  • domain-independent key technologies, e. g. cyber physical systems or intuitive human-machine interaction.
